US VS THE WORLD

A thank-you session after the workshop, with nothing left to teach.

Rømø, 16 November 2017. The wind was doing what it does there, making every simple idea harder.

Anni and Daniel had modelled for one of my workshops that day. I photographed this session with them afterward as a thank you. I wanted them to receive a complete session from me, not only the handful of photographs that happen while everybody else is learning.

Nobody got married. We were building a possibility: what could an elopement on that beach look like?

They looked ridiculously cool. I could pretend there is a more sophisticated way to say that, but there is not. Anni had brought a white dress from a designer friend. I no longer remember whether it was made for her or borrowed, and I am not going to improve the story nine years later. The socks, the Vans, Daniel dressed in black. Together they had something of Bonnie and Clyde about them. Less crime, more brutal wind.

I called the series “Us vs the World”. A big title, perhaps, but visually it was exactly that. Two people who looked as if they had made their own rules and had no reason to ask anyone else whether they were allowed.

Wedding photography inherited a lot from patriarchy and then called it timeless. You notice it in the small decisions. Who gets to take up space. Who is allowed to look difficult. Who is expected to remain pretty.

I had no interest in making Anni smaller. She works with young people and helps girls become stronger and more feminist. That mattered to me, because the way I wanted to photograph her was not an aesthetic trick. It was already there.

Daniel is a musician. He has his own presence in these photographs. Making space for her did not require taking any away from him. That would have been the same tired hierarchy with the names swapped.

Some of this was constructed. Of course it was. With the workshop finished, we had time to try ideas, place people deliberately, and get things wrong. I did not want to fake an elopement. I wanted an honest picture of a possible one.

The workshop was over. There was nothing left to teach, and enough time to keep going.

The cold stayed in the photographs. Good. I still would not warm them up.

The last frame is them walking back through the dunes. The wind is still there.

This Rømø story was photographed at Lakolk Strand on 16 November 2017 after Anni and Daniel had modelled for one of Bjørn's workshops. The complete session was his thank you to the real couple from Oldenburg. It was not their wedding. The photographs explore what an elopement on Denmark's west coast could look like when the cold, the wind and the open beach remain part of the day. Anni's white dress, socks and Vans meet Daniel's black clothes and the empty dunes. Directed portraiture and observed moments share the sequence, with enough time for both people to hold their own place in the frame. This remains honest Denmark elopement inspiration, not a fictional ceremony.
